Megan Thee Stallion headlines SNL Premiere with a Message
The 46th season of Saturday Night Live kicked off last Saturday with host Chris Rock and Megan Thee Stallion as the musical guest. The show was filmed in front of a smaller crowd at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. The show went well according to fans, but the highlight of the night was Megan’s performance of her hit song “Savage.”
Meg performed with four other dancers on the iconic SNL stage, and halfway through the performance, she paused the entire act to highlight the ongoing struggle of Black Women in America. She called out Daniel Cameron, the Attorney General of Kentucky, along with the man whose office presented evidence to the jury, who then charged the police officers involved in the murder of Breonna Taylor back in March.
The case has sparked outrage nationwide and propelled forward the Black Lives Matter movement. In the background she featured audio from Tamika Mallory stating “Daniel Cameron is no different than the sell-out negros that sold our people into slavery.”
This powerful message was viewed on television by over seven million people, a record for any SNL season premiere. Social media was buzzing with reactions after the performance and the messages behind it. Megan continued to say “We need to protect our Black women and love our Black women.”
