Malik B, a founding member of the roots passed away on Wednesday (July 29th) at the age of 47.
His team released a statement via twitter as a tribute to the artist ”It is with heavy hearts and tearful eyes that we regretfully inform you of the passing of our beloved brother and long time Roots member Malik Abdul Basit.” No further details have been released & the cause of death is still unknown to the public. His team has asked that everyone be respectful, and to allow the family the necessary time it takes to “mourn such a great loss”

A True Hip Hop Legend
Malik Basit was born on November 14th, 1972 in Philadelphia, PA. He was one of the founding members of The Roots in 1991, joining Questlove and Black Thought who started the group formerly called The Square Roots in 1987. He appeared on the group’s first four albums which were released throughout the 90s. The group became a household name after their album “Illadelph Halflife” gained mainstream love and recognition in 1996. Even after his departure from the group in 2002, Malik continued to show off his immaculate MC skills on solo projects. He released “Street Assault” in 2005, a solo EP entitled “Psychological” in 2006, and a collaborative project with Mr. Green in 2015.
However, he still kept in contact with The Roots, collaborating with on their album “Game Theory” in 2006. The group showed an outpour of love and appreciation for their lost brother throughout social media. Sharing old stories and showing their gratitude for the MC. Many other artists, such as Killer Mike and Biz Markie shared their condolences as well. Our heart goes out to the family of Malik B, may he forever Rest In Peace.
